ON MOTHER’S DAY WE ATE QUESO

REFLECTIONS ON A MOTHER’S DAY IN AN UNUSUAL TIME

This Mother’s Day my husband had just been called back to work at his weekend retail job so it was me and the kids at home for just over 10 hours. My handy hubby called on his lunch break and asked what I wanted for dinner. I settled on a local Mexican restaurant since it would be later and he could pick it up. I didn’t feel like getting out. So on Mother’s Day, we ate queso!

I did not feel like cooking my own Mother’s Day dinner and knew the handy hubby would be home too late to cook. So I just planned to fix hot dogs (uncured turkey actually, but anyway) and call it good. Takeout was so much more appealing!

We couldn’t get a hold of the first choice on the phone to place an order so he went with the next closest local joint and he just went through the drive-thru. After feasting on fish tacos, queso, and something close to Dr. Pepper made for a great pick me up.

The kids split a  taco plate and hubby had a king burrito. We had a nice evening at the end of a rough and emotional day (for both myself and the kids).

WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC AFTER ALL

This Mother’s Day we ate hot dogs because a family meal at a restaurant was not an option. It would be the next day, but who wants to come home from a celebratory meal with an infection? Not me.

I spent my day with my two precious children who I love dearly. And who I have also spent just about 24/7 with since March 13th. It was a long day.

MOTHER’S DAY HAS BEEN WEIRD FOR A WHILE

To be honest, it’s been a bittersweet day for a few years now. My own mother passed away mere days after Mother’s Day. The last photo of me, my mom, and sister was from that last Mother’s Day. It was one of my first.

The whole day feels kind of tainted now. So this year when we were stuck at home with only a virtual church service (which those little blessings make almost impossible to watch) to attend from the couch for the day I’d rather have just skipped it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the countless little scribbled notes and coloring sheet pages my kids have given me the last few days, but I’d have been just as content to have called the whole thing off and pretended it didn’t happen this year.

Saturday I was of the mindset to just push the snooze on Mother’s Day until I could sleep in, get breakfast in bed, and generally not lift a finger or wipe any butts for an entire day. That sounds nice.

SO WE ATE QUESO ON MOTHER’S DAY

It might not have looked like Mother’s Days of the last few years, but not much about this year has looked like the past few years either. At the end of the day, an order of fish tacos with chips and queso from one of my favorite local restaurants was just the ticket to lifting my spirits.

Then the handy hubby sat down to watch more Dark Wing Duck or something with the kids and let me get some much needed alone time. Before becoming a mother I would’ve found wanting alone time on Mother’s Day a bit ironic, but is so needed!

This post is shorter than most, but I needed to type it out. I hope all you moms reading this were able to make the best of yesterday and enjoy your Mother’s Day. For all you moms who weren’t able to see your grown children because of the pandemic, I am sorry.

And for all you moms (or not yet moms) facing your first or yet another Mother’s Day without your moms, I empathize. It does get better, but I think it’ll always be bittersweet.

That’s all for today, but I will be back Thursday with a new YouTube video (fingers crossed – last week’s didn’t make it out til Saturday) and another post on Friday. Have a great week! And if your states/towns are opening back up and you’re venturing back out into the world stay safe and healthy my friends!

Until next time…

  1. I love that you celebrated in your own way, for us lockdown started after Mother’s Day and my hubby was at work. It’s lovely with the kids but I didn’t miss the fuss this year it was nice to just be.
Fab post and enjoy the quest!

  2. It is great that you got to celebrate Mother’s Day with some queso! I like that you still made the most of the day and enjoy yourselves. Sometimes, it’s not about the fancy things but the gesture instead. Thanks for sharing!
