It’s the last week of school before summer break, which means it’s (past) time to figure out what to do to keep the kids entertained all summer without breaking the bank. Don’t worry, there are plenty of things to do for frugal fun for the whole family over the summer break.
FRUGAL FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY – KEEP IT LOCAL
This one is a bit of a no-brainer for a smaller budget, but there are still so many options. My goal this summer is to take the kids on one new adventure a week that is either free or frugal. Here is a general list of suggestions to get your search engine started.
- Local Museums—Think art and history, not the expensive children’s play centers (although those make great experience gift suggestions). Many museums showcasing local history have free general admission.
- Discover Downtown – Most cities with a bit of history likely have an old town square or historic district downtown. There are typically plenty of interesting attractions within a walkable area. Go as early as businesses in the area open for the day to beat the heat, wear some comfy shoes, and see where the day takes you.
- Nature Centers – Local and state park nature centers are fun, educational, and frugal (if not free). Check out the calendar of events for special demonstrations, classes, or fun activities.
- Summer Movie Specials – Some theater chains offer half-price days or special screenings of family favorites for as little as $3.
- Local Library – This one is a weekly trip for us in the a Life on a Dime household. It’s one of my personal favorites of the week! Most libraries have a summer reading program and special programming.
- Local and State Parks – We’re well on our way to joining Club 52 by visiting all of the Arkansas State Parks (speaking of, I need to catch up on posts). Some require a road trip, but chances are there are several places to explore a short drive away.
- Vacation Bible School – If you’re a family of faith, this is a great, typically free activity. It’s also a good opportunity for the kids to socialize with school friends.
A LIFE ON A DIME’S FRUGAL FAMILY PLANS for summer 2025
This summer will be full of firsts for the a Life on a Dime family; our daughter will be going to not one, but two overnight camps. The first is a local mission project and the second is a local summer camp.
The family will also spend a long weekend not too far from home and introduce the kids to one of our favorite getaways.
I for one am looking forward to sleeping in a bit longer, spending quality time, and enjoying a bit slower pace. Whatever we do together it’ll likely be (mostly) frugal and fun.
